July through September 2005

Happy Labor Day! What a uniquely American tradition that we celebrate the working man by . . . not working. Anyway, I missed the actual date due to a ton of work, but on August 26, this very website celebrated its eighth birthday! The original version of the site didn't have a news page, but you can do back to October through December of 1998 and see what kind of foolishness I was writing about back then.
I'm also looking into a different way to do the mailing list. The Yahoo groups thing is a bit of a pain and tacks on a bunch of annoying ads that we have no control over. Further updates as they become available.

Well, I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that the July club brew Oatmeal Stout that I made is now on tap at my place. The bad news is that I racked it on Sunday. Out of the primary. After 47 days. Cough. I couldn't rack it before I left for vacation in July and then I was deluged with work. Thankfully, the beer tastes great. My plan to make half of the base malt Munich instead of Pale Ale seems to have done the trick. I'm really pleased. I don't taste any yeast autolysis side-effects. The strong stout flavors probably would mask anything anyway. My point is this: it may not be recommended procedure to do it this way, but it still can work.

Bill and Bob have volunteered to host the September club brew at the House of Homebrew in Green Bay. Note that the date will be September 13. Make sure to bring plenty of cash along to take advantage of their wide variety of reasonably priced brewing supplies! (This reminder brought to you by your faithful webmaster, who is a hopeless suck-up.)

Emergency! Mike just emailed saying that he won't be able to take the September club brew. If anyone would be able to take it, please email me ASAP! You would also have your preference of having it on the 6th (the day after Labor Day) or the 13th.

Phew! July was far more "interesting" than I had hoped for. I've got a ton and a half of pictures to add to the site--if only I can find the time to do it. Stay tuned!
Attention Joe Riha! The email address we have for you doesn't work. Please send me the updated address. Thanks!

I want to thank everyone who made the long trek up to Oconto Falls for the club brew on Tuesday. Unfortunately due to illness we were minus one brewer. Still, a record was set with three brews. Ryan Landwehr and I brewed all-grain and Chuck Goluecke brewed extract. Those of you who were there know that I ended up with a bit more wort than I anticipated and a very active starter. The two combined to make a mess on my basement floor on Wednesday. I went down there to find a little river of stout jetsam. If I didn't have the carboy covered with the box it came in, I probably would have had some splattering from when the top of the airlock was blown off. Thank heavens for concrete floors and floor drains!

Happy Independence Day! Don't blow up/off anything important!
The club brew is at my place tomorrow. If you didn't get the directions, email me. Four, count 'em, four beers will be brewed by four separate brewers. We will have a corny of Falls Brewing Co. beer, generously donated for the cause by FBC owner/founder Tim Hudson. Since I'm brewing all-grain, I'll be starting mid-afternoon for anyone who might want to come up early. At least one of the batches won't start until 6:00-ish.
