Old News

April through June 2003

June 21, 2003

gak sent along a GIF of his diacetyl graphic, and so the May newsletter has been updated. It is a pretty huge file (900 pixels wide), but I kept it that way because shrinking it made it unreadable.

BTW, your faithful webmaster will be AWOL until July 2 for a well-deserved vacation. I'm hoping to hit a couple of brewpubs in the Twin Cities area, especially if my father-in-law is buying :)

June 20, 2003

At long last, the May newsletter has been converted to HTML. I'm still trying to figure out a way to get gak's cool diacetyl graphic converted to a JPG or something.

June 6, 2003

This just in: your faithful webmaster is actually brewing a beer! Film at 11. See you at the pic-in-ic tomorrow at Chuck's place!

June 3, 2003

Here's a couple of cool links you might want to visit. The first is a site devoted to brewing and enjoying meads called Mead Made Complicated, no doubt a play on Dave Polaschek's Mead Made Easy. The second is one I heard about on the HBD today. It is called UK Brewing Supplies. Despite the name, they are based in the U.S. They have all kinds of goodies for that beer engine you always dreamed about. They even have two styles of Imperial pint glasses!

As promised, I have posted the pictures from the May club brew and this year's Titletown Open. Once again, thanks go out to Dan Rogers and Richard Stueven for the pictures. I also uploaded our May newsletter in PDF format. The HTML version will be coming.

If you are planning on attending the picnic on the 7th, make sure to email our illustrious president so that we know how much meat to buy.

I've got pictures from our last club brew and the Titletown Open (graciously sent by Dan Rogers and gak, respectively). I hope to have them online soon. Along with that, I also will convert our latest newsletter to HTML for perusing (along with the original PDF for download). Stay tuned!

Attention John Allen, Jan Kasper, Jim Enloe, and Patrick Zeeman! Recent emails sent to you seem to indicate that we do not have your correct email addresses. Please email me with your new or corrected email address!

If anyone is interested, I've got some East Kent Goldings rhyzomes available to a good home. I'm also looking for suggestions for a good British ale yeast from White Labs. I used to use Wyeast 1098 (British Ale, the Whitbread strain) that fermented relatively dry and gave off a lot of nice fruity esters. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Feel free to email me on either subject.

Don't forget about the picnic at Chuck's place on June 7!

The recipe for Bob's Best of Show-winning Bock has been added to our BoS recipes page. I'm going to try to dig up the recipes for the two years we are missing. I've tried the beers that are listed there and they all were fabulous.

This morning I actually found a use for the Martha Stewart show. I was flipping through the channels and saw a segment on Real Ale. It made me thirsty. It also made me realize just how much we've lost with the demise of Sherlock's Home in the Twin Cities. Sigh.

May 15, 2003

The winners for the 2003 Titletown Open have been posted. Congratulations to all who won and all who entered! Special congrats go out to our president, Bob Franklin, who won Best-Of-Show with his 44-point Traditional Bock!

Please make sure to check our updated Corny keg page. It contains new information on our Corny keg sales. Please note: the terminology may be more clear now, but the deals are just as screaming as ever.

May 5, 2003

Before the annual flood of email comes in, I will answer everyone's question: No, I do not have the Titletown Open results. As soon as Mike tabulates them and emails them to me, I will post them. If they aren't on the site, I don't have them.

Don't forget about the club brew tomorrow, once again held at the palatial Rogers estate.

May 1, 2003

Friday at 7:30 P.M. is the deadline for entries for the Titletown Open. Get brewing, er, bottling! Judging will commence on Saturday at 10 A.M.

The Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild is looking for volunteers to work two-hour shifts to help out with their annual Great Taste of the Midwest on August 9th. If you are interested, email MHTG's own Mark Morrison.

April 8, 2003

Well, whaddaya know? Yesterday I got my back issues of Brewing Techniques in the mail! New beer-related reading material == good.

Yesterday also marked the 70th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. Even if you missed the official anniversary, that sounds like a good reason to have a homebrew.

Jeff Rogers will be brewing a Weissbier for our May club brew, which will be held at his father's home (for the second straight brew). Email Dan or Jeff if you need directions.

Don't forget! The ninth annual Titletown Open will be held at (appropriately enough) Titletown Brewing in Green Bay on May 3! If you don't have a beer ready get brewing!

April 3, 2003

Dan Rogers sent along some pictures from the club brew he hosted. I've finally gotten around to posting them. Thanks, Dan! Don't forget our meeting this Saturday at Titletown!
