Old News

April through June 2001

June 28, 2001
gak informed me that he has a rather large amount (around eight pounds) of Centennial pellets looking for a good home. The alpha is in the 10% range. Bring a container and see gak at Egan's for the goods.

Somehow or the other, Rackers.Org is a Top 100 Beer Site. Go there and vote for us! I don't know what happens if we get to number one. Maybe they'll unchain me from my desk and let me see my family again.

According to Cargill Malts, Belgian maltser DeWolf-Cosyns will be closed by parent company Interbrew in 2002. It will be interesting to see if someone picks up their specialty malts, particularly the unique Special B.

Brewed myself a batch of IPA on Monday. Should be hopperiffic!

Chuck Golueke reminded me about the History of Brewing in NE Wisconsin exhibit at the Neville Public Museum. It looks like it would definitely be worth checking out. It will be running through February 10. The first picture on that site has a sign that might look familiar . . .

Just a reminder: gak will be tapping some cask-conditioned Best Bull this Saturday at 3:00 P.M. There is only one five-gallon cask, so make sure to get there early.

There's a brand new Egan Brewing News available for your reading pleasure. gak managed to mess up his mailing list, so if you want to receive the Egan Brewing News in your very own email inbox, go to http://eganbrewing.com/maillist.shtml and sign up.

Get this: I actually brewed again yesterday! I whipped up a bit of an experimental dark mild. We'll see how it turns out.

Club meeting. Green Bay Brewing. Today. Be there.

My rhizomes are finding new homes with Chuck Golueke and Jay Brown. Hopefully they will do well! My bines have been growing like mad with all this rain.

I drank my second bottle of Czechvar the other night. What a great beer! If I could brew a pilsner, I would want it to be just like that. Then again, who wouldn't?

I plan on buying a book on PalmOS programming today. I hope to hack together an IBU calculator. I'll keep you posted. My C skills are rather rusty, so we'll see how it goes.

Egads! I actually brewed yesterday! I made a batch of my plambic, racked the old batch on to 10 lbs. of Door County cherries, and racked the new wort on the old dregs. I had to pitch an extra pack of dry yeast to the new batch. The old yeast wasn't doing much and I didn't want my basement microbes to start fermenting it.

I dug up about four good rhizomes from my Kent Goldings bines. If anyone is interested in them email me! First come, first served. My bines are growing like mad. Both mounds are almost ten feet long!

The Czechvar is in! gak will be at Egan's today if you want to pick some up. Unfortunately, there are only seven bottles and $3 a pop, so one per customer. It's supposed to be available in Illinois so maybe we can get our hands on some more.
May 4, 2001
Great news! gak got his hands on some Czechvar (aka Budvar) which is winging its way to Egan's. The bad news is that there is only two six-packs. If you are interested in trying some of this hard-to-find classic beer, email gak ASAP.

Thanks to gak I now have directions to Steve Olson's place tonight. If you would like directions, please email me BEFORE 3:00 P.M.
April 30, 2001
Well, I have determined that the club brew is in fact tomorrow night and it will be at Steve Olson's. Unfortunately I don't have directions. Hey Steve! Email me if you read this! Otherwise, apparently some guys are meeting at Egan's to carpool down there at 5:00 P.M.

gak sent along the following two blurbs. First, Great Taste of the Midwest tickets go on sale tomorrow. Check out their website for more details. Second, there is a large amount of beer left over in Egan's coolers from the Titletown Open. Thus spake gak, "It needs to find a good home *SOON*, as I need the cooler space for the new beers I'm bringing out in the coming days. If you want it, come and get it. If you don't, I'll be forced to throw it away, bottles and all." You heard the man.

Stewards for the contest tomorrow need to be at Egan's by 10:00 A.M. Judges should be there by 9:00 A.M.

I still have not received a definite answer on whether the club brew is on the first or the eighth. I am working under the assumption that it is the first and the schedule at the beginning of the year is wrong.
April 19, 2001
That's right, kids! There's a brand new Egan Brewing News for your viewing pleasure. Also, if anyone knows if the club brew is actually on the first or the eighth, please let me know.
April 9, 2001
So, did I miss anything at the meeting? I was unable to attend because last Wednesday my wife gave birth to another addition to my brewing staff: a baby boy!

Don't forget! Our Titletown Open VII homebrew contest will be held on Saturday, April 28, at Egan's/Gallagher's in DePere.

Good beer news (both good beer and good news)! ABC News is reporting that craft beer sales are rebounding and import sales are growing by leaps and bounds. In the same vein, gak got word that Budvar (aka Czechvar in the U.S. due to the arrogance of a certain megabrewer) is expanding their distribution in the U.S. to seven states, including Illinois (no word on Wisconsin). Check out the full spiel on Racker411. It's getting closer!
