Strange Brew Review

The Newsletter of the Green Bay Rackers - - March 1998

Dues Time, New Newsletter

I (Mike Conard) have assumed control of publishing this newsletter for the club, look out you poor, silly brewers! Seriously, I want to thank Mark Zelten for all of the hard work he put in doing our past newsletters. I hope to improve upon the product he started. I hope all of you will give me input as time goes on.

The newsletter will be published every other month, and will go out sometime shortly before the club brew session. In this column, I will usually do a re-cap of whatever business we transacted. This month, because of the large number of items of business we took care of, I have put the minutes on page 2.

I plan to send out postcards each month about a week prior to the business meetings as a reminder to each member. John is in the process of getting the membership roster updated. If you have not sent in your dues, be sure to do so! Our address is: Green Bay Rackers, PO Box 176, Green Bay, WI 54302-0176.

First Club Brew Session

Our fearless leader, and award-winning brewer Bert Zelten has graciously volunteered to start us off with our first club brewing session ever! The first club brew will be held at the Musician's Union Hall on March 3rd, at 6:00 PM. The style to be brewed has yet to be announced.

The club decided to do club brewing every other month on the months when we are not having a business meeting. The person in charge of the brew will be responsible for choosing the style to be brewed and arranging for the equipment and materials to be brought to the hall.

Anyone who is interested in leading one of these brewing sessions should contact Bert or Mike and we will put you on the schedule!

Elections & a New Start!

The meeting was held on Feb. 7th at Egan Brewing Company in De Pere. Our thanks to owner Nick Egan & brewmaster Greg Nash for their hospitality!

Mike Conard took up most of the business meeting with a report on the club survey and suggestions on what the club should do based on that survey. The move to monthly meetings with every other month being a club brewing session was strongly endorsed by the returns. (see the schedule page for this year's schedule). The responding members strongly endorsed keeping the meetings at the Musician's Union Hall, with occasional outings to local breweries, brew pubs, etc. With a strong endorsement for a more formalized meeting format, Mike has developed a master meeting agenda that the president & secretary will try to follow. We will continue to have the monthly style emphasis and will incorporate a short presentation on that style at each meeting. (We'll probably ask club members to help out with this!)

Mike then presented some changes for the brewing contest. Titletown Brewing has expressed an interest in hosting this event and the majority of the members present support the change in venue, but we don't want to alienate LifeTools either. It was suggested that the club put on a brewing demonstration at the LifeTools event and then change the contest to Titletown Brewing. As of this writing, John Blohm is checking with LifeTools on this thought, and Mike has a meeting with the Titletown people later this week. If all goes well, Mike will plan on having the contest later in May. probably two weeks after the LifeTools fair.

Mike also proposed the contest be AHA sanctioned. This will not make for any great changes in the contest, but will make it easier to get judges. Cost is $40.00, motion carried. The cost of the entry fee was increased to $7.50 for the first beer entered, and $5.00 for subsequent entries. Club members will get their first beer free, all other entries will cost them $5.00 per entry. Club members will get only one free beer, regardless of how many categories they enter.

This change was approved by the club. The club also approved the purchase of software for Mike to use for the contest. Elections were held with the following results:
  • President: Bert Zelten
  • Secretary: Mike Conard
  • Treasurer: John Blohm
  • WebPage Manager: Matt Arnold

The club approved moving to a monthly meeting with alternating months being club brew nights. Business meeting months will be Feb, Apr, June, Aug, Oct, and Dec. We will continue to meet on the first Saturday of the month at 1:00 PM at the Musician's Union hall.

Club brewing will be done on the first Tuesday night of each month at the Union Hall at 6:00 PM. A single brewer will be appointed or volunteer for that month and will be in charge of the recipe, style, and the brewing process. These will be in Jan, Mar, May, July, Sep, and Nov. Our first brew next month will be headed by Bert Zelten. Anyone who wishes to volunteer for the remaining brewing sessions should contact Bert or Mike.

Matt wishes that anyone who has recipes, water analyses, etc. for the web page should please let him know and he will be happy to post these. If you have not already checked out the page, you can do so at: www.rackers.org

Meeting ended with a tour of the brewery by Greg Nash, who also joined the club. Club emblem magnet door prizes were awarded to two lucky members!

    Club Information

This column will normally be devoted BJCP Information & beer evaluation tips. However, since this is the first letter of the new year, and with the club taking a new approach to our meetings, I thought I would use the space for some club information.

    WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
You will notice that we need people to be the brewmasters for our planned club brewing sessions. You would pick the beer style, formulate the recipe, obtain the materials (club will reimburse for these) and arrange for the brewing equipment & bottles. Let Mike or Bert know which month you want to brew in! (We recommend that these be extract beers, due to the limited brewing time available to us on Tuesday evenings!)

We also need volunteers to give a short presentation at the business meetings on the selected style. Again, let Mike or Bert know so that we can mark it on the calendar. I will include a club calendar with the newsletter every other month.
